Dental X-rays and 3D CT: how much radiation, and when you need one
Panoramic X-ray vs 3D CT explained: what each shows, typical radiation compared with daily life and flights, and when we take them.
Quick answer
Dental X-rays use very low doses: a panoramic X-ray is roughly comparable to a few days of natural background radiation, and is in the same range as a long-haul flight. A 3D CT uses more but is still low, and is taken only when it changes the treatment, such as before an implant or to check a hidden infection. Tell us if you might be pregnant.
Panoramic X-ray
One image of all your teeth, both jaws and the joints. Useful for a general check, wisdom teeth and bone level. It takes about 15 seconds.
3D CT (cone beam)
A three-dimensional image used to measure bone, find nerves and sinuses, or locate infection that a flat X-ray can't show. We use it when it changes the decision, not routinely.
How we keep doses low
- Only the images we need
- Using recent X-rays you bring
- Thyroid collar where appropriate
- Modern low-dose equipment
Questions people also ask
Can I have a dental X-ray if I'm pregnant?
X-rays are usually postponed unless urgent. If one is essential, a lead apron and minimal images are used. Always tell the dentist.
Will the clinic give me copies of my X-rays?
Yes. Ask for digital copies to take to your home dentist.
