Check-up & scaling

How often should you have a check-up and scaling?

The usual interval for check-ups and cleanings, who needs them more often, and how a trip to Seoul can fit into your routine.

Quick answer

Most adults do well with a check-up and scaling every 6 to 12 months. People with gum disease, braces, diabetes, or who smoke may need cleanings every 3 to 4 months. If your last cleaning was over a year ago, a visit during your trip keeps you on schedule.

The usual interval

Tartar builds up even with good brushing. A check-up and scaling every 6 to 12 months removes it before it irritates the gums and lets small problems be caught early.

Who needs it more often

  • Gum disease, now or in the past
  • Braces or retainers
  • Diabetes
  • Smokers
  • Dry mouth from medication

Fitting it into travel

A check-up and scaling takes about an hour and fits easily into a city trip. Bring any recent X-rays so we don't need to repeat them.

Questions people also ask

Is it bad to get scaling too often?

Not when it's spaced appropriately. Scaling removes tartar, not tooth structure, so regular visits are safe.

I've never had scaling. Is that a problem?

It's common. The first visit may take a little longer and gums may bleed more, but it's the best time to start.
