Toothache medicine at a Korean pharmacy: what to ask for

How to find a pharmacy (약국) in Seoul, which over-the-counter painkillers are available, useful phrases, and when medicine isn't enough.

Quick answer

Look for a sign reading 약국 (yak-guk). Pharmacists can sell common over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen without a prescription. Show the phrase "치통이 있어요" (I have a toothache) and mention any allergies or medicines you take. Painkillers only mask the problem, so see a dentist if pain lasts more than a day or there's swelling.

Finding a pharmacy

Pharmacies (약국) are on almost every main street in Seoul, often near clinics. Many close on Sunday; look for one marked as open on holidays, or ask 1330 for help.

Useful phrases

  • 치통이 있어요 — I have a toothache
  • 진통제 주세요 — Painkillers, please
  • 알레르기가 있어요 — I have an allergy
  • 잇몸이 부었어요 — My gum is swollen

Over-the-counter options

  • Acetaminophen (often sold as Tylenol)
  • Ibuprofen
  • Sensitive-teeth toothpaste
  • Antiseptic mouthwash
