Teeth sensitive after whitening? How long it lasts and what helps
Why whitening causes zingers, how long they usually last, simple ways to ease them, and when to call your dentist.
Quick answer
Sensitivity after whitening usually lasts 24 to 48 hours. Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, avoid very hot or cold drinks, and take a painkiller you normally use if needed. If it lasts more than three days or one tooth hurts much more than the others, contact the clinic.
Why it happens
Whitening gel temporarily opens microscopic channels in enamel, letting temperature changes reach the nerve more easily. As the tooth rehydrates and the channels close, the twinges fade.
What helps
- Toothpaste for sensitive teeth, used for a few days before and after
- Lukewarm drinks through a straw
- Your usual painkiller if needed
- A desensitising gel applied in the clinic
When to get in touch
- Sensitivity lasting more than three days
- Pain in one tooth that's much worse than the rest
- Pain when biting, not just with cold
Questions people also ask
Can I fly the day after whitening?
Yes. Flying doesn't affect whitening sensitivity. Bring sensitive toothpaste and avoid icy drinks on board.
Does sensitivity mean the whitening went wrong?
No. Short-lived sensitivity is the most common, expected side effect and doesn't mean the tooth is damaged.
